The chances are that you have never asked for a glass of Tempranillo, rather if you have enjoyed Spanish wine it is likely that you will have had it in one form or another.

Tempranillo is Spain’s premier black grape variety & is grown widely throughout its northern & central vineyards. It is the principle grape of Rioja but in other DO’s it is often referred to by its local name for example Tinto de Toro in Toro.

Fermented on its own it can produce a fresh strawberry scented Joven (young) wine. It also plays a key role in more concentrated age worthy oaked blends. International varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon are now making an appearance in these blends, but the traditional varieties are Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano & Carinena (Mazuelo).

We have selected the wines in this case to walk you through some different styles of Tempranillo from various DO’s & also to show case the effects of oak aging.
