Discovering the Wines of Valencia: Spain’s Mediterranean Treasure

Couple strolling in Valencia

Valencia

When we think of the wines of Spain, regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero often steal the spotlight. Yet along the country's sun-drenched Mediterranean East coast lies one of Spain's most exciting and diverse wine regions, Valencia. Combining centuries of winemaking tradition with a new generation of innovative producers, the wines of Valencia can offer exceptional quality, distinctive native grape varieties, and remarkable value.

Valencia has a long tradition of producing aromatic white wines, particularly Moscatel, and fresh whites from higher-altitude vineyards.

However Valencia is best known for its high-quality red wines made from indigenous grapes such as Bobal and Monastrell which is my focus here.

Vineyard in Valencia in Autumn

Valencia's vineyards range from the Mediterranean coast to inland mountains

The Denominación de Origen (DO) Valencia, officially established in 1932, encompasses more than 13,000 hectares of vineyards spread across the province of Valencia. Unlike many wine regions that share a relatively uniform climate, Valencia's vineyards range from the Mediterranean coast to inland mountains reaching elevations of over 900 metres. This diversity creates an extraordinary variety of growing conditions and wine styles.

At Ambiente we are proud to support wineries & wine makers such as Bodegas Arráez and Bodegas Volverwho through innovation, sustainability and a renewed focus on indigenous grape varieties have helped transform the international image of Valencian wine. They have demonstrated that grapes such as Monastrell & Bobal can produce distinctive, premium wines. While Parra Jiménez is based outside Valencia, its leadership in organic viticulture reflects a broader movement within Spain towards sustainable wine production & produces a fabulous Appassimento style Monastrell.

Bobal – Valencia's Hidden Treasure

Bobal ~ Valencia’s Hidden Treasure

Although Bobal is traditionally associated with the neighbouring DO Utiel-Requena, it also plays an important role within parts of Valencia and has become one of eastern Spain's flagship grapes.

For many years Bobal was unfairly dismissed as a high-yielding grape suitable only for bulk wine production. However, old vineyards, some over 80 years old, have revealed the grape's remarkable potential when yields are controlled.

Modern Bobal wines display intense ruby colour, vibrant acidity and flavours of blackberry, black cherry, plum and wild herbs. Floral notes of violet combine with hints of black pepper, cocoa and Mediterranean spice. Unlike many warm-climate reds, Bobal naturally retains excellent acidity, giving the wines freshness and elegance alongside their generous fruit.

Its firm tannins and concentration also make it capable of ageing for many years, with mature examples developing savoury notes of leather, tobacco and dried herbs.

Monastrell – The Mediterranean Specialist

Monastrell ~ The Mediterranean Specialist

Monastrell, better known internationally as Mourvèdre, is another grape that thrives under Valencia's intense Mediterranean sunshine. Perfectly adapted to hot, dry conditions and poor limestone soils, Monastrell produces deeply coloured wines with impressive structure and complexity.

Young wines burst with flavours of blackberries, damsons, liquorice and black pepper, while ageing introduces aromas of leather, game, cocoa and smoky spice. The grape's naturally thick skins contribute firm tannins, making it ideal for oak maturation and long bottle ageing.

Wine and food have evolved together in Valencia for centuries, making local wines natural companions for the region's famous dishes.

No pairing is more iconic than Paella Valenciana, the original version prepared with chicken, rabbit, green beans and butter beans. A medium-bodied Bobal, with its bright acidity and fresh berry fruit, complements the saffron-infused rice while balancing the richness of the meat.

Monastrell’s combination of ripe fruit, firm tannins and refreshing acidity means it pairs best with foods that are rich & savoury. The protein softens the tannins, while the wine's fruit and spice enhance Mediterranean herbs and roasted flavours. We recommend that you try it with red meat, game, strong cheeses or hearty vegetarian dishes such as grilled aubergine or lentil stew with smoked paprika.

I would strongly recommend a trip to the wonderful City of Valencia but in the meantime would encourage you to seek out a Bobal or a Monastrell on our wine list, it may very well become a new favourite!
